As someone who doesn't really get involved in internet trends, I did replay SA2 back then and was like "This wasn't as good as I remember", this was before I saw anyone else's opinion let alone youtuber opinions. But even I agree went way too far to the point of being disingenuous. It really hit me when watching an SA2 stream and the chat was so overly critical that it didn't feel natural. I do think the whole thing is rather sad, it's not the only time it's been popular to hate on something, and even worse when that thing is actually good or maybe just different. Lately I think not just of the fans but the developers of such works and how it must feel for them. Now days I'm more skeptical of youtubers because of the potential narrative or angle that they might be going for in order to bring in views, which is sad in and of itself as I know even if they want to be fair, the pressure is high.

It's up to your own interpretation whether you believe the comics are canon to the games, as this wasn't the case in the past. But given that one of the head comic writers (Ian Flynn) is now helping to write the games, and multiple characters original to IDW have been referenced or even directly appeared in games in the last couple of years, I choose to believe the current game canon and the IDW comic canon are heavily related if not one in the same; therefore, the Zeti did survive the events of Lost World.

So glad someone made a video talking about this !! Early UA-cam, specifically in the gaming sphere, Creators literally joked/meme'd on Sonic a tad too much that it really tainted the franchise. It caused this weird rift of people regurgitating opinions and such. Sonic '06 for example, was not ragged on as much as it was later on. Only time can tell, and just like that, only those there during that time AND before would really understand. Early reviewers absolutely exaggerated the bad. Oh, and purposely trying to break the game? Absolutely. People was scratching to knitpick on the series. Sonic '06 sadly gave them fuel to light the fire. They exaggerated the hell out of how bad that game was then started doing that for whatever Sonic game they can think of. This is not even too mention, the 'civil war' that was brewing post SA2 with wanting 'SA3' and what not, which only got worse as more games and time went on. Eventually, 2012 would arise and we get things like Sonic.EXE and Chris Chan (Sonichu) which would rift the fandom even more. I could go on & on but really, those who know, know. The damage is done already; Can only hope for a 'speedy' recovery ! ;0

Quality-wise, nothing has changed. There hasn't been anything decent in years. Superstars was just acceptable, and Frontiers was one of the worst games I've played, easily in the top five worst Sonic games.

I feel like the issue with 2010s UA-cam was not really the fault of the reviewers... and with that I need to explain in a long-winded manner because that's usually what I do. Personally looking back as someone who was around during that time, the biggest issue with 2010s UA-cam is that it was when we really came to understand one factor of online fandom that is overwhelmingly frustrating. Quite a few people aren't looking to have their own opinions but rather they'll snatch what a reviewer has and act like that opinion is gospel or worse, twist it. This was steadily happening all over with media, people universally treated games reviewed by AVGN like crap, any movie Nostalgia Critic hated would be put down as irredeemable garbage. Of course the thing is, this media is made usually for adults and if you understand subjectivity? You'd recognize this stuff for what it is, ultimately subjective reviews by people sharing their own opinions and sometimes they won't line up with yours or be exaggerated since a lot of these reviews were also for entertainment. Unfortunately the internet is so widely accessible and with most of this content being free that you have people coming in who don't either don't have this sense or they want to feel recognized by a group and so they take these opinions as gospel and are INSUFFERABLE about it. Though unfortunately with that comes issues since in turn, it's now created groups of people who have still not let stuff go and have taken everything personally to a genuinely ridiculous degree. The amount of times I've seen Sonic fans bring up IGN's Unleashed review or the Game Scoop thing to trash on them and claim they hate fans or just show up to shout down people for not liking the new game really has been understandable given the history but also frustrating because frankly? A lesson everyone can and should learn is that opinions are subjective and the only opinion that matters is your own. For instance, if someone says they only like a portion of SA2 and explains why but you still think of it as your favorite game? By all means do so. For the inverse, if you're calling a game bad because some UA-cam man expressed it and you haven't played the game? Get your own opinion and understand you ain't getting the degree from clown college with such subpar work.
